This time of year you’re probably seeing plenty of engagement photos on all your social media pages. When people agree to tie the knot, they will quickly take to their Facebook and Instagram pages to share the good news with friends and family.
But one woman found her engagement announcement broadcast to a much bigger audience than she ever imagined … thanks to a wrong number, a crazy coincidence and a considerate celebrity.
Charlyn Willis, a woman from Savannah, Georgia, was thrilled when her boyfriend, Dennis, recently popped the question.
Willis naturally wanted to share the great news with everyone. She excitedly composed a text showing off her newly-ringed finger.
“She was a kindred spirit, and I wanted to text her the news,” Willis told NBC New York about the person she was trying to contact.
“I sent the selfie and said, ‘I’m getting married,’ with a bunch of ridiculous emojis.”
However, a stranger named Jenna responded to the text.
“Jenna said, ‘Hey, just tell me who you are so I can forward this message to Sarah,'” Willis recalled to NBC.
Willis was confused. “I said, ‘I don’t know who Sarah is, but I apologize for the inconvenience! Have a nice holiday!'”
Willis thought she had clearly explained that it was a wrong number, but Jenna, thinking the whole situation was funny, decided to forward the message to “Sarah” anyway.
But Willis was blown away when she discovered who this mystery woman was:
‘Buffy’ herself—Sarah Michelle Gellar.
By some bizarre coincidence, TV star and former Vampire Slayer Sarah Michelle Gellar received her engagement pic by mistake. The woman Willis was speaking to was her assistant.
Gellar thought the whole thing was hilarious, and she decided to give this stranger an unforgettable surprise:
She shared the engagement pic on her own social media pages.
This is #CharlynWillis. She got engaged yesterday, and meant to text her sister, but in all the excitement, got me…
Willis was stunned and thanked Gellar under her Facebook post:
“Thank you so much for this,” she wrote. “You’ve truly made my engagement experience even more of a life-changer!”
She even offered a wedding invite to Gellar and her husband, actor Freddie Prinze Jr.
Gellar has 1.7 million Instagram followers and nearly a million likes on Facebook, so Willis’ wedding announcement got plenty of attention online.
But the fact that it was ’90s icon Sarah Michelle Gellar made it extra special for Willis.
“I was just fangirling,” Willis told NBC New York.
“As far back as I can remember, she’s been a staple in my childhood life.”
We’ll see if Gellar finds the time to take up Willis’ wedding invite, but for now, she was able to connect with one of her childhood heroes—and make an engagement announcement for the ages.
