If you want to make the world a better place, just look around you—sometimes the people most in need of a friend are right down your own block.

That’s what one couple recently learned, and now their heartwarming story is going viral.

The story was shared with the Love What Matters Facebook page by Haleigh Munson Robbins. She writes that one night, her husband Brandon was taking out the trash—when suddenly, he heard someone calling out for him.

It was their neighbor, an elderly woman—who was badly hurt.

“She was sitting on her front step, and had busted her chin and eyelid,” Robbins recalled.

The neighbor, Dorothy, was 92 years old. She has another neighbor who usually takes care of her at times like this, but they were gone. Luckily, Brandon happened to pass by.

He took her inside her home, sat her down and he got her fixed up.

When Dorothy was back on her feet, Brandon returned home and shared the story with his wife.

“It broke my heart,” she recalled.

“But I was so glad he was in the right place at the right time.”

But that wasn’t all. The next day, Brandon went back to check on Dorothy—and brought her some flowers, too. (His wife made sure to point out, he got some for her as well.)

When Brandon arrived at the door, Dorothy greeted him enthusiastically:

“There you are! Come give me some sugar!”

She also joked that the young man was also “good at picking up old women.”

And just like that, an unlikely friendship was formed between neighbors.

For Brandon and his wife, it was perfect timing—they had been looking to give back to their community.

“We have been asking how we can better serve the people around us,” Haleigh explained.

Not only did they help an old woman in need, but they made a new friend with their neighbor. It goes to show how fate can throw people together at just the right moment.

“I am so glad Brandon waited to take out the trash on his own time, and not when I asked him to!”
