This dog has a very smart owner. That’s because she has one very smart dog! Meet Bella – the Belgian Malinois!  She designed this contraption for a very thoughtful purpose. Her owner explained, “I’ve had this toy made for Bella because she eats too fast when I put food in her bowl. Also because she has a lot of energy, her breed is extremely intelligent, she has a big will to please, and she wants to play all of the time!”

Watch Bella as she begins to experiment.

It was for those reasons that they have been a popular choice for military, police, and search and rescue work. It is also why many of these dogs were used during World War I. Natives of Belgium, the Malinois (pronounced mal-in-wah) are one of four Belgian herding dogs and have a very distinctive black and mahogany-colored coat with a black “mask” and ears and short hair.

Solving the puzzle gets Bella a reward!

This medium-size breed is often mistaken for a small German Shepherd and is named for the town of Malines. They are high-energy and require a lot of activity. If you are considering rescuing one these dogs, their ideal owner would be very active, too! They would be right with you hiking, running, bicycling, and just about any activity or dog sport like herding, agility, search and rescue, or flyball.

Who couldn’t love a dog like this? Bella is one awesome pet.

As you can see in this video, the Malinois’ intelligence is impressive. They are, however, sensitive to being corrected harshly. Positive reinforcement in the form of food, praise, and play will make both dog and owner happy! Their general temperament can range from being very outgoing to sometimes appearing aloof. They are great pets and watch dogs and are never shy, fearful, or aggressive. This is an indoor/outdoor dog but love to spend time with people. If they are raised with children, they can be very accepting. But know that they are a herding breed and may have a tendency to chase or nip at active kids. If you also own a cat, you might want to avoid the Malinois breed because they may not get along.
