Sydnee, a self proclaimed excellent driver, tried to pull into a parking spot between two cars—except the one on the left was parked too close and she ended up grazing the one on the left.
She didn’t even dent the car—she literally left just a scratch—but she felt absolutely terrible.
So she left a note with an explanation and her phone number: “Please contact me so we can get it taken care of.”
It wasn’t long after that she got a call from a woman. Immediately, Sydnee started apologizing.
“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh! Hi. I am seriously, so sorry,” she said, once the woman on the other end of the line introduced herself. The woman asked her to meet at a nearby ice cream shop, and Sydnee immediately said it was fine.
Now it was time to wait.
As Sydnee was sitting outside the ice cream shop, a random guy struck up a conversation.
Insurance information in hand, she told him she had hit a girl’s car today and was now waiting for her.
“Oh that happened to me once and it took $200,” he told her. “And my insurance went up $100 that month.”
She winced, that was exactly what she didn’t want to happen. But now it was unavoidable. And at least she would know she had been honest—“and I’ll feel better about myself anyways,” she added, resigned.
“Well, cool, I appreciate honest people,” he told her.
Then he handed her an envelope.
“What? What is this?” she asked.
“Oh I just got back from work and had some extra cash so I figured you could use it more than me,” he said to her bewildered reaction. “For being honest—I just appreciate honesty.”
“You’re kidding me,” she said, still doubtful. He insisted he wasn’t—he’d been in that situation before and wanted to help.
“Can I hug you? she asked. “I’m going to cry.”
Then he told her his real reason.
“Because you hit my car,” he said. Her jaw literally dropped, and he couldn’t help laughing.
“I hit your car???”
He explained he had his friend make the call—and it was a huge relief. “But I’m not taking this!” Sydnee said.
“It’s like that big!” he said of the scratch. He wanted to reward her honesty.
“You hit the right person’s car today,” he said.
