Being a school custodian can sometimes be a tedious and mucky job, especially when there are all types of messes to clean up. However, this is different for a janitor at Los Primeros School in Camarillo, California, who besides doing his job perfectly, goes ahead and spreads his joy to the students in this institution. The janitor who goes by the name Rocky Lopez has been dedicated to his work for the last 37 years, but it was not until one day in December 2014 that he received something he is going to remember for the rest of his life.
Rocky has always been on the front line in extending love and kindness to all kids in the learning institution.
“My purpose is to help people and be happy, because we’re one big family,” Rocky said, introducing himself for what he thought was a short video about the school.
This positive and caring attitude towards the students drove them into recognizing the man who has now become part of their family. In their quest to acknowledge Rocky’s good deeds, the student’s leaders contacted the “Dude Be nice” team who helped them in organizing a surprise celebration for Rocky in the school auditorium. Dude.Be nice is a clothing company that sponsors programs in recognition of the unsung heroes in the society for their special acts of kindness.
Therefore, student leaders together with the clothing apparel designers worked together in organizing the celebrations aimed at recognizing Rocky.
They formed a heartwarming plan that included inviting his granddaughter and a former member of San Francisco 49ers football team, which is Rocky’s favorite team. They also bought the custodians favorite candies and participated in making banners and signs in recognition of the janitor.
“He’s always nice, he’s always positive, and he knows how to make our day,” one student said.
After everything was ready, all that remained was a plan to lure Rocky to the auditorium where all students were gathered. One of the school officials called him on a walkie-talkie and summoned him to clean up a mess in the hall.
It did not take long before Rocky got to the auditorium and made his way to the front to clean up the mess. At this time, Rocky says something appeared odd since about 200 students sat quietly and all their eyes looked directly at him as he made his way to the middle of the stage.
Instead of getting a mess to clean up, Rocky was showered with his favorite types of candies as everyone else in the room chanted, “We love Rocky!” The ceremony then commenced with everyone else in the room recognizing the cheerful custodian in their own special ways.
At the end of the day is the fact that most students identified him as a light for everyone around him. Rocky also received a football from Adam Snyder, a former 49er signed by different students.
The 58 years old custodian had managed to keep his emotions in check throughout the ceremony, but he began tearing up when he posed for photos with the students. In a statement, Rocky said that he is a great advocate of good character and showing kindness to others, and further states that his primary goal in life is to help people and be happy.
The heartwarming video on YouTube on January 2015 has received over 3 million views from people all over the world. Rocky did not expect much from the students by being kind and caring on every passing day, but they were quick to recognize his dedication and positive attitude to them. This means that people are ready to acknowledge a kind act and they will always spread the love in one way or another. I am sure this act of kindness will forever remain one of the best moments for Rocky Lopez.
