When Matthew Hartman decided he wanted to propose to his girlfriend for her 21st birthday, he had the perfect idea … or so he thought!
Hartman enlisted the help of good friend and photographer Jonathan Hwang to capture the moment he got down on one knee. He then made sure friends and family were present on a rocky coastal shore of Laguna Beach, where he brought his girlfriend up onto a rock outcropping in the shallow water and prepared to wow her.
He started with a song sung to her from atop the rock, then got down on one knee after fishing the ring box from his breast pocket—it was picture perfect!
Just as soon as he had mouthed the words, though, nature had plans to spoil the perfect moment!
The couple were rocked by a massive wave, knocking them straight off of their perch and back to shore.
Both were luckily okay, without any harm done, so the entire incident is nothing short of hilarious; it was made all the better by the fact that Hartman managed not to lose the ring, and Hwang managed to capture some seriously breathtaking—if bizarre—photos of the moment for the couple to cherish forever.
While the real story is that his girlfriend said yes, though, Hartman’s poorly-planned location will go down in infamy due to the live recordings taken during the proposal itself. Hwang’s pictures are stunning, but nothing does the incident justice quite like watching it unfold in realtime!
