Being pregnant is one of the most wonderful times in a woman’s life. It’s a time full of happiness, peace, and anticipation. We want everything to be perfect and just can’t wait to meet our new baby. But those blissful days were cut short for one woman when she suddenly woke up in the middle of the night to the smell of smoke.
Nicola Taylor was 8 and a half months pregnant and eagerly awaiting the arrival of a baby girl when she found herself in what seemed like a nightmare. Her apartment was on fire.
She pulled the fire alarm, ran outside the building, and watched her apartment go down in flames.
Just two days prior, she was anticipating the arrival of her baby joyfully at a baby shower that her friends had put together. She was looking forward to using all the toys, clothes, and supplies for her baby girl. But now that was all gone, along with her apartment.
Taylor couldn’t believe her eyes. But she wasn’t the only one devastated by the tragedy that night.
The firefighters at the scene were just as devastated as Taylor. Watching the soon-to-be mother mourn the loss of her home and everything she had to take of her child just broke their hearts.
“[The firefighters] were seeing a whole bunch of burned up baby items and it was very emotional for the guys, being parents themselves, it hit home,” Captain Jerry Gonzalez of the Lauderhill, Florida, fire department said. “They were compelled to do something. Something touched us about this family.”
So they decided to surprise Taylor with a baby shower.
The firefighters worked hard to put everything together and surprise the expectant mom.
There were pink balloons, a cake, and brand new gifts for the baby.
But that wasn’t all.
The Lauderhill, Florida firefighters put together a GoFundMe campaign to help Taylor find a new home and even paid the deposit and 3 months of rent so that she can focus on her baby with ease.
Taylor was overwhelmed by their kindness. “There’s no words to describe it,” “My dad, he cried. That explains it all. I never see my dad in tears.”
