Surveillance cameras captured an unusual scene inside the North Reading police station in North Reading, Massachusetts recently.

The video showed two people run into the police station with a limp puppy, and what happened next demonstrates just how prepared police are to handle any situation.

When Megan Vitale needed help for her puppy she desperately rushed into a police station.

On March 4th, Megan Vitale sprinted into the North Reading police station with her 9-week-old Saint Bernard puppy, Bodhi.

The puppy was carried inside by Vitale’s friend—apparently the dog was choking on food, and it was limp and unresponsive.

Security footage showed Vitale’s friend attempt to give the puppy mouth-to-mouth as Vitale frantically paced back and forth while waiting for an officer to assist them.

North Reading police officers quickly worked to revive the puppy.

According to a statement from the North Reading police department, Officers Jorge Hernandez, Peter DiPietro and Joseph Aleo, along with North Reading firefighters worked to save Bodhi’s life.

They administered chest compressions and back blows, and eventually they were able to dislodge the obstruction.

Firefighters, who were at the police station, used a special pet oxygen mask to give oxygen to Bodhi.

Once revived, Bodhi received oxygen through a special pet oxygen mask.

“Ultimately, a life was saved thanks to rescuers falling back on their training and remaining calm,” Police Chief Michael P. Murphy said. “Even though we are not faced with this kind of incident every day, the officers reacted just as they would in any emergency situation.”

Fire Chief Don Stats commented that situations like this are the very reason why his firefighters are trained to handle just about anything.

“We do not get to choose the emergency situation that comes our way, so it is important that first responders be prepared for anything,” he said.

Officials reported that the puppy was able to leave with Vitale and visited the vet, and Bodhi was expected to make a full recovery.
