This cat seems to be having a staring contest with something on the rooftop. Prods and pokes won’t move him from his perch, or get much of a response.

Cats are always staring at things, sometimes unblinkingly, and sometimes as if they’re looking at something you can’t see (ghosts?).
This is partially true—cats can see things we can’t see.
Cats, like some other animals, can detect UV light, and many things reflect UV, which humans cannot see.
This means ordinary objects like a piece of paper or the curtains, or chemical substances like shampoo and detergent, look brighter and maybe give off weird patterns.
Cats will also remember where they last saw a squirrel or bird or even a spider, and sometimes return to that place to stare it into submission.
