Occasionally pilots will make announcements to their passengers during a flight. Those announcements can be anything from a quick introduction to the weather at their final destination to a warning about upcoming turbulence.

When Jon Emerson got on the PA system his announcement was anything but routine and took many by surprise, including his girlfriend who was also working the flight as a flight attendant.

Emerson and his girlfriend, Lauren Gibbs, work for the same airline.

A few days before Christmas, Emerson and Gibbs found themselves working the same flight from Detroit to Oklahoma City. The pilot welcomed his passengers on the plane and then veered from the normal pre-flight announcements.

“She doesn’t know this yet, but it’s going to be an even more special day for her,” he said into the PA system.

The pilot got down on one knee and proposed to Gibbs in front of the entire cabin.

Gibbs was absolutely shocked. She told The Independent that the move was out of character for her fiancee.

“Jon is a really quiet guy, with a very shy personality so for him to do it in front of passengers was so not like him, but for me it was perfect and so thoughtful,” she said.

The couple often works on the same flight with each other.

Emerson shared that he had been planning this moment for nearly three months. He wanted to time his proposal so it would coincide with the couple’s anniversary.

The proposal went off without a hitch and Gibbs happily said yes!

Congratulations to the couple!

Although the two got engaged on a plane, Gibbs wrote on Facebook that they don’t have any plans to get married on one. Never say never!
