Orangutans are very clever animals. Many in the scientific community even consider them to be above chimpanzees when it comes to intelligence. Orangutans are capable of learning to use tools for sewing, making rain hats from leaves, and even understanding the purpose of such actions. They form complex cultures, and demonstrate subtle social behaviors. These animals are also suspected of having morality and feelings.

It’s clear that this orangutan knows what he’s doing.

So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the orangutan would understand the abstract meaning of fairness, which is a part of having an evolved sense of morality. Implications from scientific research are one thing, seeing an orangutan behaving fairly is another thing.

Look at the two of them playing catch!
