For many stray dogs, life on the street can be cruel. Surviving the elements and finding food are just a few of the daily struggles these poor animals have to endure. Even dogs lucky enough to be captured by authorities are often put down if they are not able to find a home.
Fortunately, that was not the fate for Lana, an 8-month-old dog rescued in Brazil late last year; after she was rescued, she was quickly adopted by Suelen Schaumloeffel, and her fiance. If the story were to stop there, we could rightly cheer Lana’s good fortune, but Lana never forgot what life was like on the streets, and her incredible display of generosity will melt your heart.
Lana’s new owner loved her from the moment she took her home.
After she was adopted, Lana was given a nice dog house in the Schaumloeffel’s spacious yard. There, her new owner heaped on all the love and kindness she could to make Lana feel as comfortable as possible; the pair gave blankets, treats, and toys to the little Lana as often as they could.
Yet for all Lana’s comforts, and Schaumloeffel’s kindness, Brazil is still inundated with stray dogs. Estimates suggest there could be hundreds of thousands roaming the streets and countryside. Schaumloeffel’s neighborhood was not spared the impact of strays, either, and from time to time, a particular stray dog would appear around Schuamloeffel’s yard.
Lana never forgot her life on the streets.
The dog would come around, but didn’t let anyone get near enough to check for a collar. Since it was not threatening or violent, Schuamloeffel ultimately decided to ignore it, thinking it might simply be lost. However, her own dog’s kindness ensured Schaumloeffel would not be able to ignore it for long.
Earlier this year, the weather in Brazil began to chill, and Schaumloeffel started to worry for Lana’s health. So, one day she bought Lana a thicker, larger blanket, and tucked the little pup into her dog house for the night.
The next morning, though, Schaumloeffel’s fiance discovered something extraordinary: Lana had dragged her new blanket out of her dog house, and both Lana and the stray had been sleeping on it together.
Lana shared her new blanket with her stray friend.
“I thought, ‘How beautiful what she did for her friend,'” Schaumloeffel told The Dodo. “My best four-legged friend reminded me of something so important: generosity!”
Schaumloeffel had never meant to help the stray, but now she decided to help rescue it, inspired by Lana’s example.
While it still runs away whenever they approach it, the pair have started leaving food and water out in the hopes of gaining its trust. She would have never considered trying to do this without her little Lana.
“She is the nicest little dog I’ve ever met,” Schaumloeffel said according to The Dodo. “We forget sometimes the difference we can make in someone’s life. She reminded me of this.”
