Kayakers’ boats are sinking and one can’t swim so cops make an over-the-top rescue

Yes. That was dramatic, but totally necessary

I believe Woody Allen once said that, “life doesn’t imitate art, it imitates bad television.”

While each one of us can probably point to a number examples from our daily lives that prove this statement true, none seem to fit this quote more aptly than a recent, incredible rescue that seems straight out of one of those cheesy cop shows.

And, really, no matter what your opinion on art or TV, this is one time where its just better to sit back and enjoy the awesomeness.

The only hope for two kayakers were the brave men and women of the Seattle PD.

Around 7 p.m. on May 9, two kayakers, a man and a woman, paddled along the choppy waters of Seattle’s Lake Washington when they began having some trouble. After a time in the lake, both kayaks began to sink.

To make matters worse, one of the kayakers wasn’t wearing a life vest and couldn’t swim.

Due to the seriousness of the situation, Seattle police officers Morgan Irwin and Mark Rawlins rushed to the scene. However, as they got there, they realized that there was a key problem: the kayakers were in the middle of the lake and the officers had no way to get to them.

Time was not on their side, but they had one advantage—there were other people on the lake enjoying water sports.

Like a scene from an over-the-top cop-show—the two officer raced to the water’s edge.

“I’m about to commandeer this jet-ski,” Rawlins said in a video captured by his body cam.

They had a plan; commandeer a jet-ski and race towards the near-drowning kayakers to save their lives. Without a moment’s hesitation, they ran full speed toward the jet-ski and hopped on.

Once they were securely on the craft, they raced to the beleaguered kayakers.

They reached the first kayaker as the woman was desperately clutching her sinking craft. They threw her a life preserver, which meant that she was out of danger.

But the other kayaker was faring much worse; he was nearly 100 yards away, bobbing up and down in the water. This man could not swim and would soon drown without help.

“We’ll be back,” one of the officers can be heard saying in the video to the woman.

They turned the jet-ski around and sped towards the sinking kayak.

They arrived in the nick of time.

They arrived in seconds, just in time as the kayak was completely submerged.

“Thank you so much,” the kayaker can be heard saying in the video. “I’m so happy to see you.”

The police grabbed him and pulled him out of the water. With the kayakers out of immediate danger, a Seattle Police Department boat arrived on scene to pick up the kayakers and bring them to shore.

The heroic officers then returned the jet-ski to its owner and transferred the two people to EMT workers. Though their condition was not reported, it’s unlikely the kayakers suffered any serious injury.

The video was posted to the Seattle Police Department’s YouTube channel with one appropriate modification.

The whole rescue was captured on video which, later, the Seattle Police Department posted onto their YouTube channel.

But with one slight modification: over certain parts of the video, they added the Baywatch theme.

And no matter what your opinion of those old, over-the-top TV shows, it certainly was fitting given the unbelievable rescue.
