New mom takes photo shoot with adopted daughter—but they’re not the only ones in the photos

Adopting a child can be a long, challenging process, so when the papers are finally signed to make it official, it’s an incredible moment. Today, many foster parents decide to capture their special day with a photo shoot.

But one new mother’s photos perfectly display the real experience of adopting a child.

Millie Holloman, from North Carolina, had always wanted to be a mother, but never considered becoming a foster mom before. But she told ScaryMommy that she made a pact that if she wasn’t married and didn’t have kids by 35, she would adopt.

“Why am I waiting for everything to come to me?” she said. “If I’m single and want to be a mom, why am I waiting?”

She made good on her promise: she signed up to be a foster mother, and became the guardian of a 5-year-old girl named Vera Wren. She fostered the girl for over a year.

Then, on March 7, 2017, the big day arrived: Holloman officially adopted her new daughter.

Holloman works as a photographer with her sister-in-law, so naturally she decided to commemorate the momentous occasion with a photo shoot.

But she didn’t want to do it with just her and her daughter.

“Today was a big day for me and my girl but it wasn’t just about the two of us,” she wrote on Facebook. “Sure, our lives are the most dramatically changed through this adoption but Wren’s story is far reaching.”

Because there were many people involved in their story, people who helped Holloman along the way and gave their support in the often challenging adoption process.

“We’ve all heard the saying, it takes a village,'” she wrote. “Well it’s true!”

So she decided to make the day extra special:

She invited her whole “village” to get involved with the photo shoot!

Subjects included Holloman’s family members:

And even adoption officials!

“I only took a few because I wanted to be in the moment,” Holloman told ScaryMommy.

She hopes the photos will one day be a meaningful keepsake for her new adopted daughter.

“I wanted something for her to look back on one day and see how loved she was/is and how excited everyone was to welcome her to our village!” Holloman told A Plus.

“I still look at the images and my eyes are filled with tears. They are such a powerful collection of images [that] represent our excitement on that day and even still today!”

The inspiring photo shoot has gone viral on Facebook with over 15,000 shares, and Holloman says she’s been inspired by the feedback.

“It’s beautiful and mind-blowing,” she told ScaryMommy.

And the new mother—who once never even thought about adoption—hopes her story will inspire potential mothers to follow in her footsteps, and remind them while the road may be tough, they’ll always have their own “village” to guide them.

“I hope other people will be inspired to foster,” she said. “It is hard, fostering is hard, a lot of things can go wrong, adoptions can fall through.”

“But even in all of that, it’s beautiful how people come together for the common purpose of the kid.”
