Most of us take the act of showing affection towards a loved one for granted. We grab another person’s hand and hold it lovingly, embrace them in a hug to show them that we care, and give a loved one a kiss without so much as a thought. But for some people something that seems so simple to the rest of us can be an impossible task.
In a video that has now reached viral status, Jonathan Grant is shown standing up and giving his wife, Laura Browning Grant, a kiss. It’s something that months earlier Jonathan wasn’t able to do.
In March Jonathan was in a near-fatal car accident.
Jonathan had just returned home to North Carolina after three overseas deployments as a Navy SEAL working as a combat medic instructor. It was a few weeks before the couple’s fifth wedding anniversary when Laura received a frightening call, her husband had been in a terrible car accident and he was unresponsive.
Along with suffering cuts and bruises to his body, he also sustained diffuse axonal injury, a brain injury that left him in a coma. Doctors were unsure if he would survive and even if he did survive they were not certain about the quality of his life.
Seventeen days after the accident Jonathan was still in a coma, but managed to squeeze Laura’s hand.
“I knew that he was hearing me,” Laura told Cosmopolitan.
Despite the grim outlook, Laura remained hopeful that her husband would make a recovery. She didn’t know if that recovery would involve talking and walking again, but she believed he would come back to her.
About a month after Jonathan’s accident he was transferred to a 90-day program in Virginia that helps patients regain consciousness. Laura left her job—she is a pilates instructor–and home in North Carolina behind and moved into a hotel near Jonathan’s rehabilitation center.
On May 16, doctors declared Jonathan “fully emerged.”
Since Jonathan began his stay at the rehabilitation center, he has improved every day. Although they may be small improvements, they are steps in the right direction nonetheless.
Laura spends between nine and ten hours a day at the rehab center with Jonathan and while she’s there she takes photos and videos of his progress. She posts them on her Instagram and it’s one of those videos that has everyone talking.
After a lot of hard work, Jonathan was able to stand up and kiss his wife for the first time since his accident.
“It gave me the chills — him kissing me back, you don’t realize how much that means until it’s almost taken away from you,” Laura told Cosmopolitan of the moment her husband kissed her.
While the future is still very uncertain for Jonathan, Laura cherishes each day she spends with her husband.
According to Cosmopolitan, the couple will plan to move to a longer term rehab center closer to the Grant’s home in North Carolina so Jonathan can continue receiving the care he needs. Although his accident put the couple’s life plans on hold, Laura believes everything will work out one day.
“I’m grieving the guy I married and our life, realizing the new life ahead will be just as beautiful,” Laura told Cosmopolitan.
