Months after wedding obese couple makes New Year’s Resolution—now they’re unrecognizable

"This was never about us."

When happy couples tie the knot, the bride and groom vow to support each other in sickness and in health. Marriage vows aren’t supposed to be something you just say at the wedding, but a promise that is to be part of the continued journey a married couple takes.

This vow inspired Lexi Reed, 27, and her husband Danny Reed, 29–both morbidly obese–to shed the weight that had trapped them for decades.

But what really motivated the young couple to transform their lives was to fight for their future.

“This was never just about us, but the future of our family.”

Lexi and Danny tipped the scales at a combined weight of 770 pounds when they got married in October 2015. But just a few months after the wedding, the Indiana couple realized that if they wanted many more years together, if they wanted to be parents and grow old together, they had to lose weight. So on January 1, 2016, they made a New Year’s Resolution to get healthy together and never looked back.

“I knew I could never be a mom at the size that I was and that was one thing that motivated me,” Lexi said.

The pair started dating in 2007 and initially bonded over their unhealthy habits—mindlessly eating, watching television, and dining out.

“We never ate vegetables and never tried to be healthy, everything we ate would either be fried or from a fast food restaurant,” Lexi, a receptionist, readily admits.

At their heaviest, Lexi and Danny consumed a combined 8,000 calories per day–more than twice the calories that the average adult requires. He was 280 pounds at 5-foot-8 and she was nearly 500 pounds at 5-foot-6.

“We put on a lot of weight together,” she said. “Most days we would go to a Chinese buffet and eat 3 to 4 plates each before getting home and ordering takeaway.”

#mancrushmonday goes out to my #swolemate, husband, bestfriend, & one of the biggest supporters of my journey @dannyreed5. This was one of the first photos we ever had taken together. I was 16 at the time (10 yrs ago) & weighed over 300lbs when he met me. Notice how i’m hiding awkwardly behind him, yet he never asked me to change, and made me feel beautiful even at 485lbs. Losing weight brought us closer together, and we’re stronger than ever. You deserve to someone that loves you & makes you feel beautiful no matter what size! ❤ #husband #love #teenagers #losingweight #weightlossjourney #extremeweightloss #fit #fitfam #health #diet #fitspo #fitfam #plussize #weightlosstransformation #fitnessmotivation #gym #gymlife #fitcouple #fitnessmotivation #diet #fattofit #obesetobeast #beastmode #healthy #dietbet #indiana #fatgirlfedupsdietbet #bestfriend

On an Instagram page that chronicles their weight loss journey–FatGirlFedUp, Lexi has said that her love for her husband and their wish to start a family together is what really motivated her to change her life.

“We wanted to be parents one day and knew it wasn’t a healthy option for us unless we changed, and together the future ‘baby Reed’ gave us hope and motivation,” she wrote on an Instagram post.

The 485 pound, 26-year-old Lexi has also said she realized not only was her obesity preventing her from being the wife her husband deserves but it would also shorten the amount of time they had together.

“I knew [Danny] deserved a wife that could do the things he enjoyed and was healthy most of all.”

Lexi and Danny both wanted children and that dream fueled the couple to support each other and achieve their goals.

After their resolution, a friend dared them to go one month without drinking alcohol, having a cheat meal, or going to eat—and they accepted that dare. The couple also started working out together regularly and Lexi vowed to do 30 minutes of cardio at the gym 4 days a week.

“I just felt happier. I felt proud of myself,” Lexi told TODAY. “I was accomplishing something and I was finally doing something.”

#swolematesunday -392lbs 👇 combined since 1/1/16! The girl on the left had no idea that in just a few hours she would be proposed too. She struggled to walk onto the beach to see the sunset where @dannyreed5 told her how much he loved her & asked her to be his wife. He didnt care that she weighed 485lbs. He didnt care that people didnt understand why he chose her. He didnt care that she wasnt a fitness model and was plus size. He loved her no matter what shape, size, or flaws & never asked her to change. He supported her goals & dreams & loved her for who she was – no matter what size. He saw who she could be before she even saw the greatness within herself. To be his wife is a gift and i’m lucky to have someone who pushes me daily. Together we are unstoppable and well never go back to the life we lived before. We may have lost 392lbs, but we gained a life. We all deserve someone who loves us for our heart – not our size. We are all beautiful despite a number on the scale & no one should make us feel any less. Both Lexi and Danny were adamant about transforming their lives by making small changes on a daily basis. Instead of eating out, they cooked healthy versions of their favorite foods at home and prepped their meals for the work week.

“I think that’s what made it easier, we didn’t feel like we were depriving ourselves of our favourite foods,” Lexi said.

“Danny was really supportive and we started to make everything from scratch at home, we found alternatives ways of eating food that we loved, so we would still eat pizza but it would be a healthy option.”

They exchanged their regular trip to McDonald’s for a homemade, healthy version of a traditional burger. Their bun-less burgers feature an onion, a meat patty, and ketchup wrapped between two pieces of crunchy lettuce. Instead of pairing their burgers with fries, the health-focused pair served themselves celery sticks.

“We just switched the fast food for healthy choices,” Lexi said.

Every month Lexi would lose about 20 pounds, and every month, as her body changed, so would her fitness strategy.

“My weight loss has slowed and I have picked up the intensity of my workouts and adjusted my calories to continue losing consistently,” she said.

At first, doing 30 minutes of cardio four days a week was a major challenge. But Lexi was persistent and eventually was able to do an hour of cardio five to six days a week and even added Zumba to her schedule–all alongside her husband.

Slowly but surely, they both began to shed the pounds.

#facetofacefriday -303lbs 👇 naturally since last year with diet/exercise. Picture on the left was taken during my bachelorette party. I wanted to be like most girls & wear a cute sash. Sadly due to my size it didnt fit so I had to embarrassingly safety pin it on. I played it off as if I didn’t mind, but it was just another reason that added to my pile of reasons to lose weight. I was fedup. My weight held me back from so many things. At 485lbs I wasnt living the life I wanted- I was just existing. At 485lbs I was a prisoner in my own body and now I am free. While losing weight allowed them to feel better mentally, emotionally, and physically, it also made the couple’s love for each other grow even stronger.

“This helped our relationship a lot and that is pretty cool,” said Danny,

Some individuals may not look forward to their daily workouts, but Lexi and Danny love spending time together, working out side by side.

“It’s awesome because we have each other.”

#swolematesunday -392lbs 👇 naturally since 1/1/2016. Last year at a combined total of 765lbs we were FEDUP with the life that we were living. We had been together for almost 10 years and knew if we wanted many more years together we had to get our health under control. We knew if we wanted to be parents and grow old together – we had to lose the weight. I could give you millions of reasons that I personally knew I had to change, but most of all – I didnt want to die. I didnt want to feel like a prisoner in my own body any longer. I didnt want to feel like I was letting myself down & I knew @dannyreed5 deserved a wife that could do the things he enjoyed and was healthy most of all. We didnt follow a meal plan, have surgery, have a trainer, and we were your average couple that ate fast food daily while avoiding exercising or watching television. We started cooking all of our own meals & stopped eating out, meal prepping for the work week, going to the gym together after work 5x a week for just 30 minutes of cardio, quit drinking our calories, setting goals, and focused on healthy choices every single day. Slowly but surely our bodies changed, and so did our lives. You dont have to be great to start, but you do have to start to be great. Lexi simply credits her success to diet and exercise. “You don’t have to have surgery, and you don’t have to pay crazy amounts of money just to eat healthy or to have a trainer. Just move, start walking — all those things are just going to make a difference,” she said.

She fell in love with taking care of herself and said changing her perspective truly changed her life. “I changed my mindset & decided i wasn’t going to focus on the 300+lbs to lose but instead each day.”

She also notes that the most important thing is to set doable, daily goals, to hold yourself accountable and to never give up. On her Instagram page that has garnered almost half a million followers, she has said, “find your balance & moderation. This is not just a diet – this is my long-term lifestyle change I can stick too.”

“It’s a journey not a sprint.”

Many days it felt like all we did was sleep, work 8-10 hours, dinner, workout for 30 mins & repeat. Many days we were sore. Many days we didnt want to workout & the gym was the last thing on our mind. Many days we were tired and unmotivated. Many days we wanted to just rest after working all day. Many days we wanted pizza instead of vegetables. Many days we sacrificed and pushed our body to its limits. Many days that we never gave up, skipped our excuses & showed up anyways. @dannyreed5 & I have literally worked our asses off & worked hard every single day since last year – TOGETHER. Giving up our life before has brought us closer. Together we chiseled out of our old bodies and into our new life.
