Michelle was sitting in the car with her three children, her eldest daughter Crystal at the wheel, as they listened to a popular local radio station in Australia.
It was February 2015, and she thought she was on the way to the spa for a well-deserved respite after several difficult months. In December of the previous year, Michelle had gone through the hardest imaginable thing for a parent—she lost a child.
Her 19-year-old son Blaine died in a freak accident at work for a turf company, and the devastating event shook the whole family. He was such a huge part of his mother’s life, always showing his affection with a big heart and smile.
He helped out at home frequently and was even doing some renovations on the house to make Michelle’s life better. He was a brilliant 19-year-old, and the family felt the tragic loss deeply.
A few months later, Crystal told her mother she needed a little break. A spa trip would help her relax, and they could make it a family outing.
So they packed everyone into the car to go on the trip.
As they drove, one radio host said to another that they were going to be doing something a bit different that week.
“We’re going to be speaking to this person through the radio,” host Jackie O began.
“They are a passenger in a car right now, and they don’t know this is about to happen.”
“This is someone who has lost someone very close to them and she has been struggling with this loss for a while now,” the host continued.
At this point, Michelle was still barely paying attention to the radio.
Then it started to seem strangely coincidental.
“The woman I’m speaking to, she has her three children in the car with her, she’s wearing a light blue top—and she thinks she’s heading to a spa day.”
The host’s next word confirmed it. “Michelle,” she started, as Michelle looked over at her daughter, bewildered. “We are talking to you.”
She looked at her daughter for confirmation, and Crystal’s horrible attempt at hiding her laughter gave it all away.
“What?” Michelle asked.
“And I know how hard you’ve been suffering, you’ve faced what no parent should ever have to go through,” Jackie O continued. “Her world was turned upside down.”
Michelle had recently been facing the pressure of having to go back to work, and she was just not emotionally ready. Her daughter Crystal had reached out to the radio station in hopes that by telling her story, she could receive some support.
And as the host started talking about Blaine, Michelle started to cry.
The host then told Michelle her mortgage would be paid off for the next six months by Claredon Homes, and that they would be able cover the renovation work and costs of what Blaine had started on the house.
Everyone in the car—and the host—was fully crying now, and Crystal handed her phone to her mother so she could reply on air.
“Hi,” Michelle said through tears. “Thank you so much, thank you so much. I can’t believe it—it’s wonderful, thank you.”
