The relationships between men and beasts has been a source of fascination for centuries.
While the ability to communicate and develop relationships with typical domestic pets is already intriguing enough, though, the relationship potential between humans and larger, more predatory animals remains largely unknown—which makes relationships like the one between this 400-lb bear and her trainer an absolute must-see.
Meet Amy, the enormous Syrian bear living at the Orphaned Wildlife Center in Otisville, New York.
Rescued after the breeding program she was in was marked a failure, Amy has spent her entire life in captivity.
While she’s still a larger-than-life, incredibly imposing figure to most humans, her upbringing has included enough human nurturing to result in incredible relationships—like this on with trainer Jim of the Center in New York.
Just watch and see what she does! And no, nothing you see was pre-practiced at all—just a sign of immense trust between human and bear.
According to Kerry Clair of the center, Amy was bred as a part of a program to save the Syrian bear, but the collapse of the program left her with little choice but to remain in captivity for life; she’s neither allowed out in the wild in New York nor allowed to return to Syria.
While she may never know the wide open wild, though, it sure seems like she has a lot of fun where she is.
