Going to see your eye doctor, dentist, or physician may not be the most enjoyable thing to do. Many people put off those appointments until the very last minute. But sometimes waiting too long can cost you your life.
Mike Bell from Texas ignored a tooth infection until it was almost too late.
Bell was at work when his boss told him that he should go see a doctor because he didn’t look so good.
“My boss came to me, he said, ‘Hey Mike, you look a little bad. You need to go to the doctor,’” according to USA Today. Good thing his boss noticed, because Bell could have died.
After Bell’s boss told him to see a doctor, Bell was rushed into surgery.
Bell had a tooth infection, but because it was not treated, the infection had spread to his bloodstream and his heart. An X-ray revealed that Bell’s heart valve was not working properly and fluid was building up in his lungs.
One look at Bell’s condition prompted doctors to rush him into surgery.
“Without prompt intervention, he would have died within a few hours,” Dr. Mark Pool said.
Bell recovered from the surgery and is thankful for being able to have caught the problem on time.
“I got to watch my son turn 21, I got to have another Christmas with my family,” he said. “That is what this is all about.”
