Guardian angels might just have saved one driver from a gruesome death. A 56-year-old painter was driving his truck down a highway in Missouri when a rogue pipe shot out from under the vehicle in front of him. It careened into the windshield of his vehicle, missing his head by inches. But not only was the man completely unharmed, he also managed to drive his truck to safety without being able to see a thing.
The experience left a deep impression on the man, and for the him it was clear: dumb luck was not enough to explain how he was guided away from a grizzly demise twice in the span of a few minutes.
Steve Montgomery was driving back home from a job when he spotted a strange object on the road.
On August 8, at 8:15 p.m., Steve Montgomery was returning to his home in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, from a painting job in another town. He was driving his brand new 2017 Dodge Ram down the interstate when he caught sight of something strange.
A pipe, the drive shaft of a car, was lying on the road. But it was not going to be lying there for long. Soon after catching sight of the object, a tow truck ran over the pipe and kicked it up into the air.
The passing tow-truck sent the pipe careening towards the driver’s side windshield of Montgomery’s truck.
“It was just like a launching tube,” Montgomery told Fox2 News. “It shot it out in the air, it was just flipping and flipping and flipping … like somebody grabbed it out of the air.”
Montgomery saw it coming and seconds before it impacted with his vehicle he ducked. The pipe lodged itself into Montgomery’s driver-side windshield mere inches from his head.
“It’s just like [they] just took it and speared it into the truck … I couldn’t actually sit up because the drive shaft was right where my face was … I shouldn’t even be here talking to you,” Montgomery said according to Fox2 News.
Miraculously, the drive shaft missed Montgomery’s head, and even though he could not see the road he was able to pull over to the shoulder without further incident.
Montgomery struggled to maintain control of his vehicle. He could not see anything, but knew that he had to get off the road as soon as possible. Due to the location of the pipe, he could not look out his front window nor could he maneuver his body around it to see. Still, he had to somehow maneuver his truck from the highway and onto the shoulder.
Unlikely as it sounds, he managed to pull over without further incident. But the damage was severe. Another couple, who had pulled over in front of Montgomery, even thought the pipe had killed him.
When he exited his truck, he was given a moment to marvel at his good fortune. But Montgomery was certain that he owed his life to a higher power.
Montgomery was certain that an angel had saved his life.
In fact, his faith might not be so unfounded, either. In one of the photos he took, there is clearly a white ‘v’ shaped cloud in an otherwise cloudless sky. Though not proof of divine intervention itself, Montgomery is convinced.
“I think an angel was driving the truck,” Montgomery said according to Fox2 News. “When I was down and I couldn’t see the highway to keep it in the road, somebody else was driving that truck.”
Whether an angel, or just good luck we are just glad he made it out okay. But what do you think: was this divine intervention, or a happy coincidence?
