When Maggie, a female Australian shepherd cross was staying over at the Barker’s Pet Motel Grooming in Alberta, Canada she was spotted on camera.
After hearing the noise coming from across the room, she broke out of her kennel to locate the source of that distress.
That day, it just so happened that the local rescue crew brought in two new rescue puppies—Hannah and Kari—who were spending their first night at the pet motel.
Hearing the puppies cry, Maggie bounded over to comfort them and keep them company.
When the pet motel owner, Sandy Aldred, let Maggie into the puppies’ cage, the older dog spent the entire night cuddling with them.
Maggie, a former shelter dog who had been staying at the motel while her owners were on vacation, had only recently given birth to her own litter that was adopted out to the humane society. Clearly, her motherly instincts kicked in when she heard Kari and Hannah crying and needed to comfort them.
To get out of her own kennel, Maggie squeezed through after pushing aside a water bowl built into her door. She went straight to the pup’s kennel.
“It was really sweet,” Aldred told CBC. “She just had to be with those puppies.”
The older dog and puppies were all so happy to be together. Maggie gently nuzzled and laid down so they could cuddle with her. Clearly, this dog likes being a mother and the rescue pups who had been brought in by the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society clearly needed some extra love and attention.
Alfred told news reporters that Maggie was very attentive, “She paid them a lot of attention and you could see her little tail wagging” she told CBC reporters.
“She’d do the little bow down to them and poke them through the chain link gate of their room,” she said.
Maggie’s attention might have been sweet, but it’s not uncommon for dogs who have been mothers themselves to feel compassionate towards other puppies even if they are not her own. Most animals are like that really but dogs are more sensitive that way.
According to Deanna Thompson of the AARCS, it in their nature. Even male dogs will go and comfort puppies and make sure they feel safe. Dogs aren’t only sensitive to humans and their own kind, but there have been countless stories where dogs have shown enormous compassion. There are stories of dogs who would step in to take care of or soothe other animals who are in distress.
This is why dog lovers and pet owners appreciate places like Barker’s Pet Motel because they can leave their beloved dogs in the care of people who love caring for dogs and have animal’s best interests at heart. They take in rescue dogs and keep them while they wait for loving owners and homes.
One wonders if this temporary family would one day be reunited, and if they are would they remember that single fateful night when a mother’s instincts kicked in to soothe a pair of distressed young pups.
