Being alone can be hard at any and every age, but it is particularly hard on the elderly who may have not only outlived their loved ones, but often feel that opportunities to make new friends are gone.

A 90 year-old woman named Wanda desperately wanted some human interaction, and she decided to take matters into her own hands with a heartfelt plea. Wanda reportedly crafted a note and placed it at the door of a neighbor, Marleen Brooks of San Francisco, California.

“Would you consider to become my friend. I’m 90 years old – live alone. All my friends have passed away. I’m so lonesome and scared,” wrote the note.

“Please I pray for someone,” said the note.

Touched by what the note had said, Marleen made sure to visit Manda the next evening to introduce herself, bringing along cupcakes.

In addition to her new friend, Wanda also got a bit more attention after Marleen told the story to Frank Somerville of KTVU News, which revealed just how hard Wanda’s situation had been, with her declining health and also having lost a child.

A new friend!

Marleen told Frank that Wanda was incredibly sweet and so pleased when she finally got visitors!

“I hope you didn’t think I was stupid for writing you, but I had to do something,” said Wanda to Marleen. “Thank you so much for coming over. I’ve lived here for 50 years and don’t know any of my neighbors.”

Wanda explained that she has three sons, but one passed away from cancer last year, and the others don’t live nearby.

“She’s 90 and and is on oxygen and has congestive heart failure, osteoporosis, among other ailments,” said Marleen. “[I] made sure she knew she can call us at anytime and that I’ll be back to spend time with her! I’m sure Wanda and I will have some great times.”

“I love this story,” responded Frank.

“[But] there are so many others…”

“[But] there are so many others out there who are lonely just like Wanda. I would ask that maybe you consider knocking on their door and saying hi. I know it would mean the world to them. And who knows, maybe you’ll make a new friend,” he said.

In addition, Wanda’s story also touched Senator Claire McCaskill, who released a video in response!

Video message for Marleen and Wanda in Missouri

“Marleen B. of Missouri came home to a heartbreaking note from one of her neighbors. The 90-year-old woman living down the street wrote her saying she was lonely. She asked if the two could be friends… ‘Would you consider to become my friend? I’m 90 years old—live alone. All my friends have passed away. I’m so lonesome and scared. Please I pray for someone.’”Frank Somerville KTVU and Scary Mommy: Claire was touched by your story and would love to get in touch with Marleen and Wanda. Everyone needs a friend, and we can all do better at making sure our most vulnerable aren’t forgotten.

“If you know someone like that in your neighborhood maybe consider going over to their home and saying hi. Maybe bring them some cookies too. I guarantee that you will make their day. But at the same time you may also make a new friend. How great would that be?,” added Marleen, according to Bored Daddy.
