Little Aaliyah from South Carolina had a major emergency on her hands. She needed help desperately and she needed it now! For a preschooler, she saw “major crisis” as something a little different than most of us do.
Nonetheless, she knew she had to act quickly, and that’s exactly what she did.
She’d been taught what to do in an emergency, so followed the protocol … and dialed 911. After all, this was an emergency, at least to her it was.
After a few hangups, the dispatcher sent Officer Martha to check the scene out.
When she arrived, Deputy Martha Lonus knocked on the door. She couldn’t stop laughing at the “emergency” she had been called to investigate.
Aaliyah called 911 because she needed help putting her pants on!
“This little 2-year-old girl dialed 911 without her parents knowing,” Officer Martha told Fox Carolina. Her mom was at work and her grandfather was taking care of her.
When her grandfather answered the door to the police, he was a little surprised and confused. But Aaliyah was ready to present her emergency.
“The door opened up and she comes running out to the front with half a pant leg on and she’s just like ‘HEY,’” Officer Martha told WSPA.
“I just ended up sitting down on the stairs helping her put on the rest of her pants and then it was almost like a reward, she just wanted a hug,” she explained.
It was the beginning of a great friendship.“My heart went out to Aaliyah because not too long ago, I was a little girl dialing 911 just so that I could get officers to show up at my house!” Officer Martha told Inside Edition.
Aaliyah’s grandfather called her mother when Officer Martha finally left. “My dad gave me a call and was just like, ‘your daughter just called the police on me!'” her mom told ABC News.
That was the beginning of one awesome friendship.
Aaliyah now knows how to call officer Martha directly should a similar emergency occur. She also promises to never call 911 for such a reason again.
“I thought it was awesome that at two years old, she knew to call 911 at all,” said Officer Martha.
And she was grateful for the light relief from what can often be a difficult job.
