A woman who lived in Jilin Province in China started practicing a meditation discipline called Falun Dafa, or Falun Gong, in 1997. At the time, her husband seemed fairly indifferent to his wife’s new spiritual interest.
The practice had become very popular in China in just a few years. It included five meditative exercises and taught people to align with the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance.
Many people found that the practice improved their health and outlook on life, and Chinese authorities also found the practice helped reduce medical expenses for the state.
However, in 1999, the Chinese regime suddenly began a violent persecution campaign against Falun Gong and began spreading bizarre rumors about practitioners in state-run media.
The woman’s husband soon changed his behavior and began opposing his wife’s practice of Falun Dafa. One day when the woman was not at home, her husband burned all of her Falun Dafa books and a picture of Mr. Li Hongzhi, the founder of the practice.
The woman was very upset. She tried to explain to her husband that it was wrong for the Chinese regime to persecute such a wonderful practice, and it was wrong for him to destroy her valuable things, but he refused to listen.
“After that incident, I didn’t talk to him for a very long time,” she said, according to Minghui.org.
A while later, her husband decided to buy commercial housing to start a business. His wife worried that it was a risky move, since the property was in the midst of a dispute. However, her husband was very stubborn and decided to go ahead and buy it.
The man gave the first payment of 60,000 yuan (about $9,500) to the developer. Once they obtained the deeds to the property, the developer said, the man would need to pay the final amount. In March of 2008, the man started his business.
In April, the bank contacted the man and said there was a mortgage loan on the housing. The bank said that if the loan was not paid off, the bank would claim ownership of the property, and they threatened to sue him.
The man told the bank that he was unaware of this when he bought the property from the developer, but the bank insisted he was legally responsible.
“My husband tried to contact the developer many times, but he was nowhere to be found. After that, my husband suffered from depression. He became restless, lost his appetite, could not get a good night’s sleep, and sighed in despair every day,” said his wife.
In May, the woman’s husband presented his case as the defendant in court. All he had was a handwritten receipt for 60,000 yuan from the developer, while the bank had the mortgage loan certificate.
“From the beginning, it was clear that the bank would win,” said the woman. “My husband lost the lawsuit and had to pay 4,300 yuan.”
However, he refused to accept the outcome, and he decided to appeal to the intermediate court. Eventually, the man successfully contacted the developer, who told him to obtain paperwork from a person who was managing the case and get an attorney.
“When my husband got home with the materials, he realized that the property had already been through a trial in the intermediate court and lost. If my husband had known this earlier, he would never have bought it,” said his wife.
To make matters worse, it was the developer who had lost the case. The man realized he had been scammed, and he had no chance of winning his case.
“In the two weeks after the case, he did not eat properly and lost a lot of weight,” said his wife. “The developer had stopped answering my husband’s calls. Eventually, my husband was on the edge of collapse.”
During this time, another person who practiced Falun Dafa decided to come visit the couple, and they chatted for a long time. Eventually, the husband realized he had actually done something very serious by helping the Chinese regime persecute people and burning his wife’s treasured books in the past.
As the saying goes, “What goes around comes around,” and the man thought he was possibly experiencing this trouble in his life for his actions.
Several days later, the court notified the man of his appeal date. The day of the appeal, the man walked up to his wife and said that he took back everything he had ever said and done against Falun Dafa and sincerely promised to never interfere with his wife’s spiritual practice ever again.
He also added his name to the “Tuidang” list of people who publicly withdrew from the Chinese Communist Party and its other organizations, in order to show that he did not agree with the regime’s persecution.
As his wife later recalled her husband’s actions, tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Thereafter, the matter took a turn for the better,” she said.
The man contacted the developer, who called the chief of the intermediate court, asking him to explain the situation to the chief of the lower court. The chief of the lower court terminated the case and sent the results to the intermediate court chief, who personally handled the man’s case.
The court case was quickly concluded, and the man continued to conduct his business in peace.
His wife shared his story online in order to inspire others to realize the amazing benefits that can come from taking a stand for what is right.
