Matted Dog Was Neglected Since Birth—But After Rescuers Put on Leash, Things Get Violent

This touching video shows Hope for Paws’ rescue team acting on a call regarding a stray dog, named Benji, hiding under a parked Chevrolet. Having lived a life on the streets, he was in a sorry state.

When Eldad Hagar, the organization’s founder, and his associate, Lisa Chiarelli, came to Benji’s rescue, they realized the dog’s condition was worse than what they’d expected. They knew they had to catch him in order to give him a better life.

Rescuers cornered him and put the rope gently around his neck, but he started leaping in crazy fear and terror. Pitiable yelps, bared teeth, snorts, and growls—he just lost it.

“Physically: he was so badly matted, covered with ticks and fleas, he bit his tongue as he was struggling to escape from us, so you’ll see a little bleeding – nothing serious. Mentally: Benji was living on the streets all his life, so human contact was so hard for him to get used to,” Eldad wrote on YouTube.

Lisa can be heard saying in the video in a soft tone, “Are you ready for a better life?” Finally, the dog surrendered to their calm and soothing voices.

Benji’s fur was in an appalling state. One volunteer said it was the worst case of matted fur he had ever seen in his life. At the center, his badly matted fur was shaved off before he was given a bath.

However, Benji was scared and “shut off” from the world for more than 10 days. The team said in the video that he was “always looking for a place to hide, and not wanting anyone to touch him.”

Gradually, with lots of love and care, as well as the companionship of Lisa’s pit bull mixes—Lola and Frankie—Benji began to open up. “The process took 5 months of love and care,” Hagar wrote.

Eventually, Benji looked simply cute and fluffy with all his fur regrown—he was happy, both mentally and physically! Soon, he was adopted by a loving family.
