Cayla Chandara has heard stories over the years of people giving phenomenal tips to waiting staff. But, although she works hard at two jobs herself in hopes that she could one day afford to go back to school, she would have never expected to have been the recipient of such good fortune.
Thanks to an Australian couple, this Waikiki waitress earned a $400 tip on a $200 meal.
Chanara met the couple while working at the Noi Thai Cuisine in Waikiki, and they got along swimmingly. According to Sunny Skyz, “They asked me where I was from, and I told them I moved here for school but I was kind of in a little bit of debt and I couldn’t go back to school, because I couldn’t afford it and the cost of living here,” Chandara explained.
“I just thought it was so generous of them. I never get tipped that big. I had to say thank you,” she said. “During dinner, they told me where they were staying, so I ran there after work to see if they’d still be there.” Chandara later met with the couple where they were staying to thank them with a card and flowers.
The next day, the couple met up with her again at the restaurant and later offered to help pay for her student expenses, which cost over $10,000.
“I was like, ‘No way, you don’t have to do that for me. I just wanted to say thank you,'” Chandara added. “I still don’t feel like it’s real. I want to run around in the streets.”
The identities of the Australian couple have been kept anonymous at their own request.
“I want to make them proud. I will take this opportunity with an open heart and be a better person that I can be every day,” Chandara concluded.
