Dementia is a cruel disease. It will try hard to take away so much of our memories and knowledge before it takes us in whole. That was the reality facing Mallory Headings’s grandfather.
What both Mallory and her grandfather found out in the midst of this difficult time, is that dementia cannot take away everything.
Music is the best medicine.
Mallory had a special bond with both her grandma and grandpa. When she was younger and her parents were both working, they took care of her. That gave the three of them the opportunity to share many special moments together. When the day came that Mallory’s grandpa had to move to a nursing home, it was the memory of shared music that proved to be the strongest medicine.
Mallory’s grandma and grandpa had enjoyed singing together, and “there was always music in their home,” Mallory recalled to the Facebook page Love What Matters.
After they had settled her grandfather into the nursing home, Mallory and her family were about to leave for home when they decided they wanted to do one more thing. Sing an old gospel hymn “It is well with my soul.”
Amazingly, Mallory’s grandfather started joining in too, and he still remembered his harmony part.
No doubt Mallory and her family with remember the precious moment for many years to come.
