It’s times like these that really warrant the phrase “man’s best friend.”
When the Bensch family couldn’t find their 3-year-old daughter Victoria in their Lakes Cordes, Arizona home one February evening, they were horrified.
The chances of the little girl surviving the freezing night in the Arizona wilderness were slim, and time was running out.
But 15 hours after she went missing, they were shocked and touched by what they found.
Victoria’s parents called authorities as soon as they realized she was missing, and a search team was immediately dispatched to find the little girl.
Then they realized there was someone else missing from their home—their family dog.
The toddler had wandered from her home in nothing but a t-shirt and pink pants and into the nearby wilderness, where she spent the next 15 hours in freezing temperatures.
But she wasn’t alone. She had a friend with her, the family dog named Blue. Blue had wandered off with the child and never left her side throughout the entire night, keeping her warm and safe.
When the rescue team finally spotted Victoria from a helicopter after 15 frantic hours, she was in a ravine about half a mile from her house, curled up in a ball, with Blue by her side.
It was a miracle that she survived.
Sgt. Jeff Newnum of Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office is convinced Blue saved Victoria’s life, keeping her warm and safe all night.
“That dog stayed with her. She was able to stay warm with the dog. And that’s probably one of the things that saved her life.”
When paramedics and rescuers approached Victoria, who was facing down staring at the ground, Blue was apprehensive. Paramedic Eric Tarr said he was concerned the dog would bite him at first, but once Blue realized they were there to help Victoria, he said the dog’s “expression almost turned into a smile.”
Tarr said the rescue was simple. When he saw the girl he simply said “‘Hey I’m gonna take you to your mommy.’ She smiled at me…she put her arms up and I picked her up.”
Her dad and her aunt Kim were so relieved and happy to have her “angel” back. And they were thankful for their heroic dog Blue too who had rescued and protected their little angel.
