Ten manatees were rescued from the Cooper River near Charleston, South Carolina and brought to warmer waters during a special operation.

SeaWorld Orlando employees and other agencies helped in the mission to transport the animals to Florida. It was an “unprecedented” effort, according to the Post and Courier.

The manatees were thought to have missed their usual migration south and became stranded in the river, where temperatures were falling fast.

Nine of the animals were released in Brevard County, Florida, while one was taken to Jacksonville Zoo for further care.
