Two men, Mr. Subramanian Shanmuganathan and Mr. Ponnan Muthukumar, working in Singapore were publicly lauded for saving a toddler from the second floor of an apartment.

They had seen the crying three-year-old girl danging from outside the apartment as her head was trapped in between the rails of an external clothes drying rack outside the service yard, and one of them climbed up to reach the girl first. The other man followed shortly to help pry the toddler free.

A man, David Cheo, who was present at the scene recorded the rescuing the process and provide the footage to his friend, Alvin Lim, a blogger, who then uploaded it in his blog. Mr. Cheo said someone has tried knocking the door for the apartment but nobody was at home.

Mr. Lim said that another two men have initially tried to save the toddler but failed until these two men came and climbed up. Mr Shanmuganathan and Mr Muthukumar later said that the climbing was easy for them as they had climbed trees before.

Mr. Lim wrote in his blog that he feels the the man “deserves a medal or at least some publicity for his heroic act”.

He added that the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) reached the scene five minutes later and brought the girl to safety.

The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) later identified the two men and awarded them the “Public Spiritedness Award” for their actions.
