Firefighters came to the rescue of a dog stranded in an icy river in Madison County, Iowa in January, 2017.
Jerry Romine of West Des Moines was out walking his own dog when he heard a dog barking from under a bridge. He then spotted the black dog, later identified as a 13-year-old labradoodle named Sam, which was struggling to keep its head above water.
Romine tried to save Sam with a 50-foot tow rope, but couldn’t reach the stranded dog.
Winterset firefighters then slid across the frozen river in a boat to save Sam, who was taken for treatment at the Winterset Veterinary Center.
Sam was later reunited with its owner, who called Romine to thank him and sent a photo of Sam recovering at home, according to local reports.
