We all have our phobias, and we all know the only way to get past them is to face them head-on. But actually doing it and willingly putting ourselves in a situation where we’re going to be at our weakest is a very difficult thing to do.
Which is why this video of a dad challenged to conquer his fear of heights has gone viral.
The uploader, named Alex, posted the video, titled “Dad faces some demons,” and it racked up over a million views on YouTube in only a few days.
“My dad won’t let a crippling fear of heights keep him from peering over the edge,” the poster wrote in the info section.
The family is at Dún Aonghasa, a famous hill fort in Inis Mór, Ireland. The hill offers a spectacular view that makes it a popular tourist attraction—but it’s presumably less enjoyable with an intense fear of heights.
So in a classic case of immersion therapy, Dad has been challenged to peer out over the edge of the cliff.
And he agrees to it—very reluctantly. The dad makes his way to the edge literally crawling on his belly, seemingly thrilled, but genuinely terrified to his very core.
“87 meters above the Atlantic Ocean,” a female voice (presumably his wife) narrates, as the dad laughs.
To his credit, it sounds like it’s been a big day for him already—the wife mentions that he’s gotten over his motion sickness and taken the ferry.
But as he finally approaches the edge, it’s time for his “final test.” His wife encourages him to maintain “uninterrupted eye contact with the Atlantic Ocean” for five whole seconds.
“If you throw up, it can go right over the side,” she says.
Can he do it? See for yourself:
Does he make it the whole five seconds? Kind of, but honestly, his chin was not quite past the edge of the cliff. Nevertheless, it’s an impressive enough start. Baby steps.
It’s always inspiring to see somebody step out of their comfort zone at all, and hopefully the experience will push him to keep conquering his fears.
This father may not have gotten to enjoy the view like the other tourists, but he definitely had a more memorable trip.
