Have you ever been in the middle of a long hike and felt like giving up?

It’s that feeling when you’re so tired you can barely catch your breath and you want to stop and take a nap in the middle of the trail.

Many humans have experienced this, but animals can go through this too, especially those that aren’t used to walking around outside much.

One such animal is Kato, a dog who wound up so tired on a walk that the Twitterverse just couldn’t handle it!

When Kato gave up on a hike, he needed a stretcher to help him back through the trail.

Kato is a BIG dog! This Great Pyrenees weighs 120 pounds and covered in puffy fur. He’s not exactly built for hiking long distances.

It should come as no surprise then that when his owners brought him along for a hike on the Maxwell Falls trail in Colorado, he couldn’t keep up for very long.

With all that fur and the  summer sun blaring down on him, he became hot and perhaps a bit dehydrated quickly.

Kato had collapsed on the ground and was unwilling to get back up again, so his owners called in a search and rescue team to carry the dog on a stretcher.

Bringing the large pup out on their own would have proven rather difficult, if not impossible.

The rescue team was able to get Kato through the trail safely. A disaster was avoided, although the stakes were never particularly high.

Despite the comical nature of this scenario, Evergreen Fire Rescue took the situation seriously, knowing it was their duty to help animals in need.

“We choose to help animals,” Stacee Martin, a public information officer at Evergreen, told 9 News.

“Doesn’t matter if a it’s a horse stuck in the mud, owls that fall out of the nest … this is something that the community supports.”

The story blew up on Twitter, resulting in many reactions.

On June 3, the rescue shared the story to Twitter saying, “Good thing Kato’s humans reached out for assistance as they were about 1 mile away from the trail head.”

Since then the story has amassed over 9,000 likes, over 2,300 retweets, and tons of hilarious comments! Here are a few of our favorites:

While most were able to see the humor in this, a few were concerned.

A number of comments blamed Kato’s owners for not carrying water on them or being inexperienced at hiking.

Yet one user who appears to have a close connection with the dog assured us this wasn’t the case.

Could they have been better prepared for this walk? Sure.

Still, it is clear that Kato is very much loved by his owners. Plus, now that this story has gone viral, he’s loved by people all across the internet as well.
