Kristen and her soldier fiancé, Kyle Upham, were shopping at a jewelry store in Santa Barbara in 2004. They were trying to find a diamond engagement ring rather quickly before Kyle was sent back to Iraq.
A Rushed Search
They struck up a conversation with another shopper who happened to be there trying to get some insight into what might be a good choice.
Kyle mentioned that it was difficult because he didn’t have the time to investigate everything he normally would for such an important milestone and celebration, since he had just come back from a tour of duty in Iraq and would be sent back again shortly.
The other shopper seemed somewhat moved by the fact that Kyle was a soldier and had served in Iraq.
“When he found out Kyle just came back from Iraq, I remember seeing the look on his face,” said Kristin in an interview with CBS This Morning. “He kind of transformed.”
The couple continued to shop but to no avail. They ended up walking out a short time later without having purchased a ring. The one that they had chosen, the one Kristen had set her heart on, was one they couldn’t afford. It was a beautiful diamond ring, but the price tag of $9000 was too much for their budget.
Their luck would change quickly.
It wasn’t long after the young couple left the store that a sales assistant from the jeweler gave them a call. They asked the couple to come back because they had something they wanted to show them. That something turned out to be a gift—the $9000 ring that they could not afford.
Keeping The Secret
But how could it be? As it turns out, that other shopper that they had struck up a conversation with was none other than Paul Walker, the famous actor! He had purchased the ring for them after they left. But the jeweler had promised not to disclose his identity at his request.
The Identity Revealed
The couple had suspected that Walker might be the famous actor, but what are the chances? They simply weren’t sure.
They kept the gift receipt from the ring, of course, and after the 40-year-old actor’s tragic and premature death in a single-vehicle crash on November 30, 2013, that employee finally let the truth be known.
A Good Man Taken Too Soon
Kristen was so incredibly moved by the gesture to begin with, but knowing that it was Paul Walker only added to the surrealness of it all. Nobody had ever done anything that kind of thing for her ever before.
“His real life speaks volumes of his character. He really did put his money where his mouth is and did good for this world.”
