A couple was recently passing the time in their Philadelphia home—him sitting on the couch downstairs with the cat, her sleeping in a bed upstairs—minutes before the building suddenly began to collapse, as if it were made of soggy cardboard.
The man noticed their cat, Baxter, was acting strangely, scratching and meowing as it had never done before, so he went to wake his wife upstairs. Then he heard a crackling sound.
There was obviously something very wrong. In what must have felt like seconds, the house was falling apart—the woman grabbed onto a piece of railing and hung on for dear life, and the man found safety in an area on the first floor.
He told Fox29’s Steeve Keeley that if not for the cat, they might not have been alive.
If the cat could talk, it definitely was telling them “to get the heck out of there.”
Both the husband and the wife sustained nearly no injuries, but their house is little more than just a pile of debris. The cat itself ran to a safe location in the kitchen and was later found unscathed.
Local reports say a construction project right next to the house may have contributed to the collapse. For now, one small cat has become a couple’s hero.
