Jack is looking at Anne, but Anne is looking at George. Jack is married, but George is not. Is a married person looking at an unmarried person?

About 80 percent of the people who try to solve this riddle get the answer wrong.

So what’s the answer?

Yes.

No matter how you slice it, a married person will be looking at an unmarried person with this setup. It really doesn’t matter whether Anne is married or not.

Let’s write this out to help visualize it:

Jack -> Anne -> George

or,

Married -> (????) -> Unmarried

Now, if Anne was married, it would look something like this:

Married -> Married -> Unmarried

And if she was unmarried, it would look like this:

Married -> Unmarried -> Unmarried

Either way, a married person is looking at an unmarried person.
