A wild peahen, a female peacock, caused a stir when she entered a California liquor store and refused to leave.
The manager of the Royal Oaks Liquor Store, Rani Ghanem, failed to notice that the bird had entered his store until a Spanish-speaking customer mentioned “el pollo,” or “the chicken.” Upon realizing this, Ghanem quickly tried to guide the bird from the store, but that only really caused the peahen to ruffle her feathers.
“This was really out of my comfort zone,” Ghanem said in a statement to CBS Los Angeles. “I was kind of scared, I didn’t know what to do.” Eventually, he called animal control for help, but that only infuriated the bird more when she realized officers were coming for her.
“He was trying to get it with the fishing net, and [the bird] jumped on the first wine bottle. When that happened, I was like, ‘Aw, this is about to be a big mess,’” Ghanem told the Associated Press. “He tried to get it again with the net … It just went straight diving into all the bottles. The more he kept on trying to use the net, the more it kept on flapping its wings and knocking everything over.”
Eventually, Ghanem had to step in to help the animal control personnel capture the bird. After about 90 minutes, the peahen was safely released outside, but had caused around $500 worth of damage — which she likely has no intention of paying for. As Ghanem quipped, “Yeah, [she]’s got expensive taste.”
