Dogs, by nature, are designed to avoid hypothermia much more than humans are. Their thick coats trap heat close to their bodies and ward off the cold air, staving off the extreme drops in body temperature for longer than if they were bare and exposed.
Cold water, though, is a dangerous situation for a dog.
Water pulls body heat away much faster than air does, and it’s able to penetrate a dog’s fur much faster too due to the denser properties.
So when a tiny dog finds himself trapped in a frozen lake, like this one, that spells imminent danger.
As crowds gather around Gagarin pond in Russia to watch, a small dog frantically tries to get himself up and out of the freezing waters, but the ice surrounding him is too slippery for traction and begins to sink.
Worried that help can’t come fast enough, one man opted to make the rescue himself – and after stripping down to his underwear to prevent weighing himself down with heavy layers and freezing his own warm clothes, he decided to dive in.
Onlookers shout words of encouragement as the man calms the dog — now ecstatically wagging his tail — and guides him over to the icy bank, where he then sets the small, furry friend on the snow and crawls out himself.
It’s worth noting that this kind of rescue should only be attempted in extreme situations, since the risk of hypothermia for both the rescuer and the dog could mean disaster quickly.
When it appeared this dog’s life was on the line, though, the selflessness shown by this man certainly restored our faith in humanity!
