This touching story shows just how far friends will go to take care of each other, even if those friends are a pair of dogs.

A concerned citizen called an animal rescue group from Uzhgorod, Ukraine about these two canines, who were lying directly on top of the train tracks in the freezing cold on Christmas day.

A female dog named Lucy had been injured by the train and was stranded on the tracks, unable to move. Meanwhile, a healthy male dog friend named Panda had come to lie next to her, keeping her warm and protecting her.

Every time Panda heard a train coming, he would snuggle up close to Lucy and encourage her to duck down to avoid hitting the train, just inches above their heads.

If any strangers approached, Panda would protectively bark at them, letting them know to keep a safe distance.

Denis Malafeyev shared the story on Facebook.

“The male dog was doing this for two days in a row. Think about it! He was keeping her warm,” he said in his post.

As the animal rescuers came to help, Panda continued to stay right next to Lucy, watching over her like a guardian angel.

The dogs were soon taken to safety and received medical treatment, while new owners were located. Amazingly, Lucy had no broken bones, only severe bumps and bruises.

Finally, people were found who could adopt the dogs and give them a home.

Malafeyev said he was inspired by the pair of pooches.

“I don’t know what to call it; instinct, love, friendship, devotion,” he said. “I know one thing. Not all people can [do that].”
