Perhaps not as well known as some of its European neighbors, Slovenia is a small country in Central Europe with a population of just over 2 million. However, it’s home to one of the most beautiful places in the world.
About 40 minutes away from the Slovenia capital, Ljubljana, is the stunning Lake Bled.
In the middle of the lake sits this picturesque island.
It looks like a scene taken straight out of a fairy-tale!
The island is surrounded by an emerald lake with a stunning view of the Julian Alps. Everywhere you look is the perfect photo op.
To get to the island, you take a traditional wooden boat known as the “pletna.”
Don’t worry—it’s safe!
Pletnas are unique to Bled and built by locals. They’ve been transporting people to the island for centuries.
One of the several buildings on the island is the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary.
To get to the church there’s a 99-step climb.
The church is a popular place for weddings. Traditionally, it’s good luck for the groom to carry his bride up all 99 steps on their wedding day—so prepare yourself, if you’re thinking about holding your wedding here!
Legend has it, the church’s original bell was bought in around 1500 by a heartbroken widow in memory of her late husband—who was murdered and thrown into the lake. As the bell was being transported to the island, a raging storm hit, causing the bell to fall into the lake and sink to the bottom.
People claim if you listen at night, you can hear the lost bell ringing.
Look at that amazing detail!
