A true friend will continue to show love and support for you, even when you’re gone. This is true for humans, of course—but sometimes even animals will express remorse for the loss of their human loved ones. One such animal is Sereno the horse, whose love for his former owner shined through in a beautiful way.
Sereno belonged to Wagner Figueiredo de Lima, a cowboy from Paraiba, Brazil. The two were inseparable until Lima’s premature death in January 2017. Lima was just 34 when the injuries from an earlier traffic accident took his life.
Dozens of family members and friends gathered for the funeral procession, including Sereno—who had been brought in by Lima’s brother, Wando.
Wando’s instincts told him that Sereno would want to be there and that Lima would have wanted him there as well. Those instincts were proven right when the vehicle carrying Lima’s coffin arrived.
“[Sereno] began to walk around the coffin, smelling the coffin. Then he neighed,” attendee Kyioshi Abreu told The Dodo. “It was a very strong emotion. Everyone who was there was moved. I cried myself when I saw that scene.”
It was certainly a strong reaction, but at that point, it seemed possible that Sereno didn’t know Lima was in there, and it could have all been a coincidence. Yet the next action Sereno took proved he knew what was going on. He stopped what he was doing and placed his head against the coffin.
“This horse was everything to him,” Wando told Globo News. “It was as if the horse knew what was happening and wanted to say goodbye.”
Then, as the group made their way to the proceeded to Lima’s final resting place, Sereno let out another sign of grief.
