Kristina McIntosh and Kyle Smith, a couple from Omaha, Nebraska, were excitedly expecting a new addition to their family: Kristina was pregnant with a baby girl, Hunter-Rose Smith.
It seemed perfect: Hunter-Rose was scheduled to be born August 16—the same birthday as her mother. But the baby had other plans.
Four days earlier than expected, Kristina suddenly went into labor.
“My contractions were so bad that she was just constantly quivering, so they had to do an emergency C-section,” Kristina told KETV.
Kristina went into the care of Dr. Jorge Sotolongo. She had never met the OBGYN before—but her mother could vouch for him, since she had used him in the past:
It was the same doctor who had delivered Kristina decades ago.
“It was weird because I had never met him in my life, but my mom’s like, ‘Oh yeah, I know him, he’s great,’” Kristina added.
It was a cool coincidence—the mother and daughter might not have ended up with the same birthday, but they shared one thing in common right off the bat.
But there was another twist.
The delivery was a success: Dr. Sotolongo helped the parents deliver a healthy baby girl on August 12, at Bergan Mercy Hospital.
For the paperwork, Kyle had brought his own birth certificate. He was looking at the details, and he noticed something for the first time: the doctor who had delivered him.
It was Dr. Sotolongo!
The same doctor had delivered everyone in the family—mom, dad, and now baby, by sheer coincidence.
Kyle had to share the news with the doctor.
“He comes over, ‘Everything went great,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, it was probably the same situation when you delivered me,’ and he had kind of a puzzled look,” Kyle told KETV.
“And that’s when I told him, yeah, he had delivered me. He was kind of shocked.”
He was shocked—but mostly because it made him feel his age:
“I realized I’ve been doing this for a while,” Dr. Sotolongo joked.
But the parents were thrilled by the coincidence—knowing that they will always share this bond as a family.
“It was cool in my mind to have all three of us delivered by the same doctor,” Kyle told KETV.
“It’s a really cool experience to be able to say that,” Kristina added.
Is the doctor down to deliver a third generation of babies?
“Who knows, I’ll be very old,” Sotolongo laughed to KETV.
But his three deliveries had to take a photo with the man who’s unknowingly become their family doctor:
