NEW YORK–U.N. Plaza Park became a sea of protesters Wednesday in response to the presence of leaders from Iran, China, and Libya who gathered for the 64th session of the UN General Assembly in New York City.

Hundreds of Iranian protesters objected the presence of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmandinejad following his recent much-disputed re-election and the violent crackdown on protesters in Iran.

Many held signs depicting bodies of protesters who had been killed in Iran and chanted slogans such as “Freedom for Iran.”

“Too much is too much. They should stop killing innocent people, stop torturing our innocent children in Iran,” said Moe Kia, an Iranian who has lived in the U.S. for 25 years. He came from Minnesota especially for the rally.

“My dream is before I die to see that country free, and that I can visit one more time,” he said.

Entertainer Ardavan Mofid said Ahmandinejad “has not been elected, he has been selected, so he is not the representative of the Iranian people. He is the one who supported all the butchering and killing in Iran.”

When Chinese Communist Party head Hu Jintao was giving his speech inside the U.N. building, protesters outside called on him to stop repression and persecution in China.

“We ask for an immediate halt to the persecution of Falun Gong, and the immediate release of Falun Gong practitioners,” said Falun Gong practitioner Rong Yi.

Tibetan protester Tenziu Wangdu called upon the U.N. to listen to the Tibetan protesters. “They should investigate what is going on in Tibet—they never do that. They just go after the money and the business.”

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, on his first ever visit to the U.N. General Assembly, was welcomed by a crowd of supporters wearing black suits.

“They are all being paid by the Libyan government” said protester Mohamed Eljahmi, adding that he was there on behalf of all victims of “Gaddafi terrorism.”

Wednesday was the first day of the General Debate of the U.N. General Assembly. Protests are expected to continue for days.
