In the opinion of Yoli Mayor, a singer based in Miami, Florida, life without music would be devastating. She has been singing since she was 2 years old and started by serenading customers in her parents’ autoshop.
“My mother always said I started to sing before I could speak,” she said, according to Miami New Times.
Struggling with her weight her entire life, she had wanted to change who she was. So, in 2017, the then-21-year-old Yoli brought her talent at Season 12 of America’s Got Talent for the world to see.
But when Yoli, a Cuban-American, took her shoot before the judges at AGT on stage, singing I Put a Spell on You—a 1956 song by Jay Hawkins, Simon Cowell stopped her just seconds in.
Just a few words in and Simon cut off the music. Yoli, clad in a black cocktail dress and wearing an elaborate hairstyle as well as jewelry, was criticized by Simon for being “very old-fashioned.”
“This isn’t working, for me. Because this is feeling very old-fashioned. You know, with the cocktail dress and everything. You’re 21 years old?” Simon commented.
When Yoli confirmed her age, Simon asked her to sing another song.

That’s when Tyra Banks, whom she’d chatted girl-talk backstage, dashed out to help get her fixed up with some girl love, removing the gaudy jewels and getting rid of those heels that didn’t suit her age. Tyra wanted her to look 21.
For the second attempt, Yoli sang a newer song, Make It Rain by Ed Sheeran, and, especially when she hit that high note at the end, the crowd rejoiced!
So, could Yoli redeem herself? Did she make it through to the next round?

Yes! Her redeeming performance got her a standing ovation and praises from the four judges—Howie Mandel, Mel B, Heidi Klum, and Simon.
Simon started off, saying: “Okay, Yoli, first of all, I apologize for what we went through here, but I’m glad we did it because I’ve just got the weirdest feeling here, Yoli, that we may just have found a solid, gold star.”
Yoli fell to pieces with joy on hearing those words.
Heidi followed, saying: “I absolutely adore you! You will go far in this competition, there is no doubt in my mind.”
Mel B exclaimed: “All I can say is, ‘This is your time!’” Whilst Howie added: “Whether it’s this competition, life, career … you have WON!”
Ecstatic to share this! Northeast coast mark your calendar and pack a bag- We’re going to #GirlSplash in #PTown…
Yoli impressed the judges during the Judge Cuts round too, in which she performed Rihanna’s Love on the Brain. Being able to hit every high note easily, Yoli was hailed as “one of the best, if not the best” singers they had that year by Heidi.
It goes without saying that Yoli successfully entered the live rounds. However, the powerhouse singer was eliminated in the semifinals.
Even so, Yoli, dubbed the “Cuban Adele,” has earned herself legions of loyal fans, who fall in love with her incredible voice! “Life got crazy,” she said. “People were stopping me on the street and saying, ‘Hey, you were on AGT. Can I have your picture?'”
Watch her get a second chance and get four yeses:
Yoli Mayor is proof that everyone deserves a second chance.
