Hayley Mills’ double performance as twins Sharon and Susan McKendrick in Disney’s original Parent Trap still delights fans both young and old nearly 60 years after its release. The fascination of how identical twins can fool those closest to them remains.
Twin sisters Kelly and Karrie Hardwick had a pretty nifty idea for how to give their parents a special surprise on their 40th wedding anniversary.
From the time they were young, growing up in rural Newton, Illinois, Kelly and Karrie were really close to each other. In pictures as kids where they were dressed identically, it was incredibly difficult to tell them apart.
However, as they got older, their careers and lives took them into different directions, and Kelly moved to live in Singapore in Southeast Asia. Living over 9,000 miles away from their daughter, the chance to see Kelly would be pretty special for parents Steve and Susie Hardwick.
As the days approached to their parents’ 40th wedding anniversary, the sisters thought it would be such a shame not to be together as a family for this special occasion. So they secretly planned for Kelly to visit Illinois without letting their parents know.
Happy birthday sweeties!!😘
To begin with, they had a family member filming the whole interaction. As one of the sisters walked down the stairs in her pyjamas to join the rest of the family for breakfast, mom Susie Hardwick asked a little baby, one of the Hardwick cousins, “Who is that? Is that Auntie Karrie?”
But the little baby was more interested in the fixings for the pancakes, asking for “more blueberries.” Meanwhile, the daughter the parents assumed was Karrie walked around the kitchen, and no one seemed to notice anything strange about her.
“Say hi to Aunt Karrie,” the family member behind the camera said to the baby. But this little baby seemed to know what was up, staying completely silent on the subject.
And right at that moment, another Hardwick daughter walked down the stairs, announcing “Are you sure I’m not Aunt Karrie?” It took Steve and Susie Hardwick a couple of seconds to figure out what was going on. Hadn’t Karrie already come down the stairs? How could she come down again? But if it wasn’t Karrie, who could it be?
Finally, with lots of laughter, these lucky parents understood that one of their beloved daughters had flown all the way from the other side of the world to be with them on their special day.
Giving Kelly a big hug from both sides, her parents were laughing and crying at the incredible surprise.
The amazing video clearly struck a chord with viewers, amassing 750,000 views since it was posted in 2013. Perhaps it’s the fun of not knowing which sister is which in the same way that their parents didn’t.
Now that the trick was pulled off so well, it’s doubtful that the sisters will be able to get away with it again; however, their parents will definitely never assume they know exactly which one of their daughters they’re talking to.
