The scene is only 7 seconds, but it’s pure kindness, and we’re lucky a passerby happened to capture it on camera so we could share it with everybody today.
In the video, a tourist can be seen approaching a homeless man sitting by a doorway in Antigua, Guatemala. The man stops in front of the barefoot vagrant and takes off his own shoes. After handing his shoes to the destitute man, he pats him on the shoulder and walks off down the street barefoot, while the homeless man can be seen putting on the shoes he was just given.
While the city of Antigua, a UNESCO heritage site, is a popular tourist site for its Spanish baroque buildings, the people in Guatemala suffer from severe poverty, with about 75 percent living below the poverty line, and merely 58 percent being able to afford to buy food.
People and tourists in the city might have been used to seeing hungry or homeless people on the street, so the good Samaritan’s act of kindness looked particularly impressive. A passerby happened to film the scene, which was later uploaded online.
The clip was later posted on social media with the caption, “This happened at around 6pm yesterday, what a heart he has.” It soon went viral, having been viewed more than 116,000 times.
Many social media users have praised the tourist’s generosity. “Few people would do this, we must follow in their footsteps,” one user wrote. “What a beautiful gesture,” another commented. “My respect to this foreigner.”
“Beautiful but what touched me was that the young man touched him on the shoulder,” wrote another. “A way of acknowledging the homeless/shoeless person as a human being. Wonder when someone did that the last time?”
Some netizens resonated with the understanding of “what goes around comes around.” One user, whose comment was quite popular, wrote: “What a lovely thing to do. I hope you get your kindness back ten fold.”
Bravo! The world needs more of such selfless people.
