This holiday season Torontonians will be greeted by seven-foot-tall snowmen at various locations in an attempt to nudge people into the holiday spirit and also help the city’s business prospects.

Tourism Toronto is featuring the giant fibreglass snowmen as part of its “Torontoland” promotions that also include shows, offers, and deals from different hotels, restaurants, and local attractions.

“Surprisingly to a lot of people, December is the lowest month of the year in Toronto for hotel occupancy rates, so it is an opportunity for us to grow the tourism business in the region because there is so much happening,” said Andrew Weir, Vice president, Communications, with Tourism Toronto.

The agency is working with hotels, restaurants, stores, theatres, galleries, and business improvement areas to offer packages and savings of up to 20 percent at more than 50 participating locations and attractions in Toronto.

The campaign, which was launched four years ago, used to also include a fall season promotion lasting from September to December.

This year’s campaign focuses on the holiday months of November and December, and among the new initiatives are the snowmen designed by local artists, which went on display this week and also support a charity.

“If you take a picture of yourself in front of one of the snowmen and upload it to our site, SeeTorontoLand.com, for every one of those uploads we will donate $2 to the Starlight Children’s Foundation,” Weir said.

There is also a “Saver Wristband” that people can get as part of a hotel package purchase or by sharing the campaign’s Facebook page with their friends. The wristband provides 15-20 percent discounts at 60 different locations that offer food, shopping, or art and entertainment.

The campaign is mainly focused on residents who live outside Toronto in places such as Ottawa, London, and Kingston, and even New York and other cities south of the border, but it also anticipates that Torontonians in the holiday spirit will take advantage of the offers.
