Tom Cruise Hints Top Gun Sequel Shoot Is Underway With Instagram Photo
Tom Cruise is finally back in the cockpit, it seems, as he hints that filming has begun for the long-awaited sequel to high-flying action flick “Top Gun.”
Cruise posted a promotional photo on Instagram, featuring his iconic character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell dressed in flight gear.
There’s a plane in the background and a caption that reads “Feel the Need.”
Cruise added “#Day1” to his post, suggesting that filming for “Top Gun: Maverick” has finally started.
According to Hollywood.com, the film follows Maverick and fellow fighter pilots as drone technology challenges their old style of flying.
“It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology, and fifth-generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce, so it’s really exploring the ‘end of an era’ of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today,” revealed Skydance Media founder David Ellison, according to Hollywood.com.
Cruise was playfully mysterious about details of the sequel in an Access Hollywood interview.
“It’s going to be a competition film like the first one, and it’s going to be in the same vein and the same tone as the first,” Cruise said, adding that it would satisfy the audience’s “need for speed and big, fast machines.”
Paramount Pictures has scheduled the summer blockbuster for a July 12, 2019 release.
