ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Popejoy Hall’s Operations and Contract Manager Tram Nguyen decided to stay at the theater after working all day to watch the acclaimed Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company on March 6.

“It was amazing,” said Ms. Nguyen. “I could not stop watching this show. It was so wonderful.”

As a youth, Ms. Nguyen performed in local plays and was a member of Honors Chorus and State Ensemble Choir in High School. She also managed a multicultural community center in Washington. Ms. Nguyen joined the staff at Popejoy Hall in 2004.

New York-based Shen Yun was established in 2006 “to revive the true, divinely inspired culture of China and share it with the world,” according to the company’s website.

“A Shen Yun performance features the world’s foremost classically trained dancers, a unique orchestra blending East and West, and dazzling animated backdrops—together creating one spectacular performance,” says the website.

Ms. Nguyen was very pleased with the quality of Shen Yun. “The visuals were just so good,” she said. “The performers were spot on in their movements, and the music was just so great.”

The coordination between all the different performers also amazed Ms. Nguyen. “The dancers and the choreography between the set and the backdrop … [had] great timing with the musicians and the music and everything. So the way the whole thing came together was just very impressive to me,” she said.

Ms. Nguyen said she appreciated the professionalism of Shen Yun’s performers and how much attention was given to every detail of the performance, from the costumes to how the music was composed and integrated into the show.

The most important part of Shen Yun, thought Ms. Nguyen, was that it helped the audience learn something new. “Nowadays most shows are about entertainment,” she said. “It’s so nice to see a show that brings culture and community together and really teaches the community something about that culture.”

Ms. Nguyen even brought her three-year-old son to the performance, and the dazzling visuals kept him interested while being exposed to a rich culture that he didn’t see every day.

Ms. Nguyen said Shen Yun gave the feeling of a message of acceptance and tolerance of others, along with the appreciation of the history of one’s own culture.

“This culture has so much history and so many layers and depth to it,” she said. “I love to see the stories come to life, the Chinese traditional stories you would never hear if you didn’t grow up in that culture.”

“Having my son see those stories and learning about them was really fun and unique too,” she said.

Ms. Nguyen said she would recommend Shen Yun “not only for the visual beauty and music, but also to take the time to learn and embrace a new culture,” with a positive and “boundless” message.
