The Mindy Project season 2 is ongoing through April. But will the Fox show be renewed for a season 3?
TV Guide, using its Renew/Cancel Index, indicates that it’s a toss up whether the show will be renewed or canceled. The index is calculated by dividing a show’s new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network.
The show, starring Mindy Kaling, was put on a month-long hiatus after hitting a new series low in November. Its episodes have been sporadic since then, with just three starting on January 7 before another long break until April 1, when a two-hour long season finale will end.
Fox Entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly said that despite the hiatus, the future for the show is bright, saying he’s “bullish” on the show.
“I love the show. I think the creativity of it … it’s really on the money right now,” he said. “Again, glass half-full, glass half-empty: The ratings are for us not where I wish they would be. I think the show deserves to have more viewers.”
He noted that the show attracts a desirable “upscale” audience, reported Zap2It.
Kaling said that she doesn’t like to speculate about the chances of another season because it’s completely out of her hands.
“All I can control is the quality of the show we’re making, and make a show I would love to see, and hope people out there have similar taste as me,” she told E! Online. “Kevin Reilly is the smartest guy I know, and he has told me many times just to make a good show, and not worry about the rest of it. I love that about him. So until we tells me otherwise, I’ll just keep operating under the assumption that much like the Pope, I’ll have this job until I die.”
